The number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as at 10 September 2024 was 6.37 million, an increase of 4.5% over the same date in 2023. RB.RU reviewed the data of the Single Register of Small and Medium-Sized Entrepreneurship Entities of the FNS.

As of 10 September 2024, out of 6.37 million enterprises, 4.2 million are individual entrepreneurs (IPs), 2.2 million are law enforcement. As of 10 September 2023, IPs accounted for 3.9 million registrations, and LLs 2.21 million. The FNL data take into account IPs and legal persons and do not take into account self-employed persons.

The number of SME staff decreased slightly in 2024, by 0.1 per cent from 15.13 million to 15.11 million.

Expert of the Moscow Office of the Russian Federation on Financial and Legal Security of Business, Sergei Elin, in conversation with RB. RU suggested that the increase in the number of SME entities related to the transformation of employees into IP status.

" We see that the overall situation with regard to the number of people involved in small and medium-sized businesses does not deteriorate, but there has been an increase in this area. This suggests that despite all the challenges we have to face, Russia ' s small and medium-sized business is moving forward " , it considers Elin.

The increase in the number of SME entities may be due to adaptation to economic conditions, State support and technological changes, and added the co-leader of the Intercessia investor rights, Anastasia Chumak.

The decrease in the total number of employees in the SME segment may be due to the automation of processes, the restructuring of employment or the optimization of business.

" Many small and medium-sized enterprises may reduce their number of employees by replacing them with technologies or increasing the burden on existing staff. Thus, the increase in the number of SMEs, coupled with a slight reduction in employment, appears to be symptoms of changes in the economic and social environment. " Cumac concluded.
